As bonsai growers, we are looking for two key qualities in our soil mixes – drainage and water retention. We don’t want our trees to be constantly sat in soggy, wet soil, as this can cause the roots to rot. We also do not want to be constantly watering. In order meet these two criteria, we end up with a granular soil, where the granules are absorbent and hold water, while excess water drains away. This means our roots can breathe and are happier, making the tree grow better.
You are also looking for a soil that holds its structure for long periods of time, since your trees will be in the same soil for years. A good bonsai soil therefore does not compact down quickly.
In addition to this, we need a soil which is able to hold nutrients, in order to feed the tree as well as provide water.
Finally, you are looking for an attractive colour so that it actually looks like earth or something you would find in the wild.
Finding this balance is a question of working out what works for you. Good quality bonsai soil will dry out faster than cheap soil, though you will have to water more. We have to balance this with our busy lifestyles.
