Forms a large tree to 30m in the wild. Smooth bark and narrow, pinnate leaves give them impression of very small leaves and tight growth with a bushy canopy. An outdoor bonsai tree which appreciates good levels of sunlight, possibly with a little shade in summer. The species if remarkably frost hardy when grown as a full-sized tree though, as with many other bonsai, appreciates some winter protection.
Although it is known as Mediterranean Ash, the grows throughout centre and southern Europe, northern Africa and parts of Asia.
