Ilex Crenata Bonsai Tree Care – Japanese Evergreen Holly

Location

Outdoor

Site in sun or shade. Protect the roots of outdoor bonsai from heavy frost and prolonged freezing weather. Ilex can handle a light frost.

Indoor

Can be kept indoors, though struggles with the dryness of the air in homes. Hard to do. Porches and conservatories are recommended. Mist spraying can help when the tree is kept indoors.

We Recommend

Keep the tree outdoors most of the year and then move into a greenhouse, conservatory or bright, well light porch during the cooler months.

Watering

Aim to keep the soil evenly moist, like a damp cloth feels.

Pruning

Grows quickly and can be shape by pruning alone. Aim to create pads of foliage and prune long shoots before they grow into the spaces between the branches.

Flowers bloom in spring on the light green new shoots, therefore you may want to allow the new shoots to grow a little before pruning them.

Each leaf will stay on the tree for a couple of years. The light green spring foliage will turn dark green over the course of the first year. In the following years, this dark green foliage will turn yellow and can be removed with your fingers / snipped off at the stalk, or allowed to turn brown, when they will fall off naturally. Keep the tree looking in top condition by periodically removing /cleaning out the older leaves.

Feeding

Feed every two weeks from spring to autumn, using a mild fertiliser at around NPK 555.

Repotting

Repot every two years using a general bonsai soil mix.
