It is stable and slow to break down, increasing water retention while keeping soil open with good drainage.

Having organic components in soil mixes is considered beneficial to the development of mycorrhizal fungus and beneficial microorganisms.

This pine bark has been composted and is generally used in place of peat-based compost.
