Akadama is a special soil from Japan. Used extensively by experienced bonsai tree growers, Akadama is renowned for its ability to hold large amounts of moisture and yet provides excellent drainage due to its granular structure.

While some growers use it unmixed, as a pure growing media, more growers use it as a component in soil mixes. It is often mixed with grit, pumice, compost and a number of other parts to produce a suitable mix.
